Music Lessons

Teaching is the most rewarding job in the world.  I am privileged to be able to teach what I love most - music.

I am very passionate about teaching and music.  Music helps broaden our viewpoint of the world and helps children use more of their abilities.  According to the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, music students received more academic honors and awards than non-music students.  A higher percentage of music participants received As, As/Bs, and Bs than non-music participants.

I was the middle school band director at St. Michaels Catholic School in Greenfield, IN for 7 years as well as directing a home school band, two flute choirs and playing in a praise band.

I teach all ages of students and have worked with children with learning disabilities. I try to build a rapport with my students and understand what their goals are for learning. I tailor my instructional style to the way that a student learns so that their experience is positive and fun.

Lesson Types

Flute

Flute is my primary instrument and I have been playing and performing it for over 40 years.  I teach beginner to advanced.

piano

Piano or keyboard is essential to learning music theory and composing.  The keyboard itself allows for visualization of the distances between notes and aides in the learning of chords and chord structures.  Piano, along with violin, can be started at a very young age (as early as 4) because there are no size/age related impediments to playing like there are in woodwind or brass instruments.

Clarinet/Bass Clarinet

I grew up listening to the great jazz clarinet players like Artie Shaw, Pete Fountain, and Benny Goodman.  For as long as I can remember I wanted to play the clarinet like they did.  I teach beginner to advanced.

music theory

Understanding how music is created is essential to playing and composing.  I include music theory along with piano lessons to help increase a students understanding.

alto/tenor/baritone saxophone

There is no greater jazz instrument than saxophone.  While it rapidly gained popularity after being invented in the 1840's, one of its main uses was in military bands.  It's reedy, sharp sound is unique.  I teach beginner to intermediate.

Composition

I include learning how to compose music upon request.  My recitals usually have at least one student playing a composition of their own.
