Piano
Piano or keyboard is essential to learning music theory and composition. The keyboard itself allows for the visualization of the concepts of intervals, sharps and flats. It aides in the learning of chords and chord structures. Piano can also be started at a much younger age than woodwind or brass instruments. All the student needs to do is be able to do is count to 5 and know the first 7 letters of the alphabet.
alto/tenor/baritone saxophone
The saxophone can also be started at around 8 years old as long as the student can wrap their hand around the instrument without having any of the side keys be depressed. If you have any questions about whether your child is ready to learn, I would be happy to evaluate your student for free.
flute
Flute is my primary instrument and I have been playing and performing it for over 40 years. I would not recommend starting this instrument until a student is at least 9 years old. music theory
Understanding how music is created is essential to playing and composing. I include music theory along with piano lessons to enhance the students experience. If you would like a more intensive music theory class, I would be happy to add time devoted just to music theory to the lesson time.
clarinet/bass clarinet
The clarinet can be started a year earlier than the flute because the physical demands for the clarinet are less stringent than the flute. All the student needs to be able to do is breathe strongly enough into the instrument to get sound and have their fingers cover the holes. music composition
I include learning how to compose music in the lesson time upon request. My recitals usually have at least one student playing a composition of their own. At my last recital, I had 4 students perform their own pieces.
